Autonomic Recovery and Inflammation

The amazing thing is that the Autonomic Nervous System can be repaired or restored years and even decades after the injury or the dysfunction first occurred. – Dr. Patrick Nemechek, D.O.

Autonomic recovery begins by lowering inflammation in the body and the brain, encouraging self-production of progenitor stem cells that go out and repair damage, basic nutrient and chemical changes in our diets, and the use of bioelectric stimulation of the Vagus nerve which carries the information about our inflammation between our brains and bodies.

A reduction in metabolic inflammation has been shown to increase the production of stem cells. Stem cells are now known to be produced in the brain and nervous system, heart, lung, liver, pancreas and kidney, even into advanced age. It is this increase of stem cell production which results in tissue and organ repair with renewed function and health.

Chronic Disease Is Caused by Metabolic Inflammation

This is the order in which we get sick on a cellular level: first our bodies are damaged, then we get uncontrolled inflammation that we call metabolic (or chemical) inflammation, and then metabolic inflammation triggers our genetic weakness for disease. In other words, we get sick because our body can no longer repair itself because of critical cellular and chemical problems caused by metabolic inflammation.

If metabolic inflammation is the cause of so much disease, why have we not heard of this?

Modern medicine has an amazing list of success stories, but successful treatments for the chronic and degenerative diseases that plague our present society are not among them. Medical systems became lost and their focus turned to masking symptoms or altering a blood pressure or blood sugar number instead of halting and reversing the actual disease process itself. We see now that the reliance on conventional drugs and surgeries does little to address the underlying cellular causes of most our chronic conditions.

Widespread metabolic inflammation is a relatively new problem for us, and we are just now realizing what the past few decades of foods and medicines have done to our health. Many of the chronic health conditions affecting us today were relatively uncommon a hundred years ago. People did not develop obesity, diabetes, Alzheimerā€™s, or heart disease. Children did not have ADD and Autism. These are modern diseases with the shared modern cause of metabolic inflammation, and we are getting these illnesses faster and at younger ages as our inflammation accumulates.

How did we all become so metabolically inflamed?

Metabolic inflammation is the consequence of pro-inflammatory cytokines that are produced by different cells types in our bodies which do not turn off. When cells function correctly, inflammation is a helpful process that repairs daily damage and keeps us alive. Ā But when the brain cannot turn off that cellular inflammation through Autonomic Nervous System communications, it contributes to various diseases and disorders.

Metabolic inflammation is an internal problem from a variety of external factors that are a result of our modern lifestyles. We no longer consume the correct omega fatty acids in our foods which keep our brains healthy, and our foods are highly processed and often contain harmful omega-6 vegetables oils that stunt stem cell production and no longer resemble the foods we have eaten over the centuries.

Our Autonomics may be injured in one event or in the accumulation of smaller events.

Neurological damage from different emotional and physical traumas will accumulate when microglia (white blood cells in the central nervous system) are primed. Ā The microglia contribute to a state of persistent inflammation within the brain by producing cytokines. Ā This brain inflammation (neuroinflammation) makes the brain more vulnerable to the next injury and Autonomic function over time gets worse.

We are also overmedicated, are physically inactive, are overstressed, exposed to environmental toxins, and an alarming number of us are suffering from overgrowths of our intestinal bacteria which themselves produce inflammation and send disruptive signals through the Autonomics to our brain. Ā All these factors have a cumulative damaging effect on our Autonomic Nervous System.
